How to Choose the Right Ring Size Yourself?
How to Choose the Right Ring Size Yourself?
The beauty of a ring partly depends on how it sits on your hand. If a ring is too tight and presses on your finger, or if it is too loose and you have to keep your hand in unnatural positions to stop it from slipping off, this is a clear sign that the ring size does not suit you.
Before measuring your size, it’s important to prepare properly. Finger size depends on the ambient temperature, the time of day when the measurement is taken, and the specific shape of the finger.
Fingers are thinnest in the morning and when it is cold (depending on how the body distributes fluids and the effect of warmth, which generally causes slight expansion – some parts of the body can change size several times during the day). For this reason, it is best to measure your finger at the end of the day, when it is at its largest.
Additionally, if your finger joints are wider than the base of your finger, you should measure both the circumference of the joint and the circumference at the base, then take an average to determine the correct size.
Here are several practical ways to determine your exact ring size:
Jewellery shop
This is the most reliable way to find your size. Every jewellery shop has ring sizers that you can try on to see which one fits you best. Keep in mind that temperature and the time of day when you try on the ring can affect the result.
Using a paper strip or string
Another method is to take a piece of string or a soft paper strip and wrap it around your finger without pulling it too tight, but also without leaving it too loose. Mark the point where the ends meet with a pen. Then measure the distance between the marks in millimetres using a ruler. This measurement is the circumference of your finger and corresponds to the ring size. For example, a circumference of 52 mm equals ring size 52.
Using an old ring
Take an old ring that fits the finger for which you want to buy a new one. Measure the inner diameter of the ring using a ruler. You can then check in the size chart below which ring size corresponds to that diameter.
Additional tips
If you are buying a ring as a surprise, do not try to guess the size. The best option is to discreetly take one of the person’s rings and determine the exact size at a jewellery shop or by measuring the inner diameter.
Keep in mind that even the same fingers on your two hands can have different sizes, so measure each finger individually.
If you are choosing between two sizes, opt for the slightly larger one.
If you receive a ring that feels a little loose (but does not fall off), try wearing it for a day or two. This will help you decide whether it truly isn’t your size or if you simply tried it on during a time of day when your fingers were thinner.
